Finding your passion - from Earthquakes to Lullabies

Updated: Aug 28, 2023

Finding excitement and overcoming depression and procrastination isn't just a matter of understanding your success is a necessity. It's a matter of finding your motivation - your will to live in a way that goes beyond basic necessities like food and sleep.

Many people in recent times have developed interests in storms, earthquakes, even conspiracy theories - while simultaneously seeming concerned with safety, crime, and health. They get themselves worked up but have nowhere to go.

Rather than focusing on journalism - or on arguing with other people - it can be fruitful to focus on results-based exploration. For example, does your interest in earthquakes spark an interest in science in general, in geology? Does it revive your appreciation of education?

Does your interest in the natural world - whatever sparked it originally - make it easier for you to enjoy walks, identifying plants, animals, and rocks? Does it make you feel alive as a human being to also see yourself as part of the natural world, which is subject to daily stresses and striving?

If you feel all worked up but have nowhere to go, it's time for a research project. Whether you want to go on a family trip to Yellowstone or a hike in the Adirondacks, a trip - or any other important experience in your life - starts with planning, and planning starts with research.
