How has the year been overall in terms of natural disasters? How does it compare with previous years?

Is the loss involved in storms mitigated by improvements in technology? If so, maybe the future is not so bleak.

Political troubles seem to be providing a very strong storm right now. Technology could improve that too by allowing us all to communicate better with one another and avoid conflicts.
